Experts in cultural heritage and environmental education will initiate school children in six Mediterranean countries - Algeria, France, Greece, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey - to discover their water heritage and learn about the issues related to the management of this resource. The programme will involve about 100 pupils in each of country - between ages 10 to 15 - who will be involved in classroom and field activities. At the end of the programme, they will prepare an exhibition of their works in order to share their knowledge with their families and the larger public in their area. Some of the themes to be tackled: the built heritage - mills, fountains, draining galleries, tanks, karsts, etc.; traditional skills and techniques adopted in the Mediterranean region for the management of water resources- irrigation and conservation methods, traditional fishing, etc.; and various oral traditions - tales, songs, languages, expressions, toponymy… - associated to both water used in farming and in urban centres. This huge heritage shows the richness of indigenous cultures and is a good entry point to educate children on the environment (the landscape, the development of the territory), the economical stakes involved (example the exploitation of water heritage for sustainable tourism and related activities), and issues related to the sustainable development of the territory in question. The programme has already started in some of the countries, and will be implemented in the following regions:
