The International Centre Cities on Water is a non-profit association founded in Venice in 1989 with the aim of promoting research, initiatives and developing scientific and cultural exchanges between urban settlements which are in close relationship with water.

The Centre is concerned with documentation, information, study and research into the problems and experiences of cities on water throughout the world, and to establish Venice as a reference point for all those who are involved in restoring a positive relationship between water and the urban context. The comparison and the exchange of experiences is the base of the working methods of the Centre which in more than 10 years has consolidated a complex network of relationships at an international level. The vast system of contacts is articulated in specific sectors, corresponding to the different work sectors of the Centre: the waterfront and the historical-industrial heritage linked to water; city-port relationships and urban waterborne transport.
