Ikonos

Distance learning in conservation of artefacts, buildings and monuments
IKONOS was born out of an ICT based approach to conservation needs. Through an innovative use of the latest satellite bandwidth pool technology, IKONOS has devised a Satellite-Enabled Wide Area Network between its partners - the first to be wholly dedicated to Cultural Heritage and its preservation. The aim of the project is to create a network of institutions which can pool resources and expertise in order to provide practical solutions to pressing problems in the field of conservation such as the drastic shortage of conservation experts, teachers and students.
The project aims to a) create a common cataloguing methodology for Cultural Heritage sites and artefacts across the Mediterranean; b) create a multi-type online database tailor-made for Mediterranean Cultural Heritage and c) facilitate the training of trainers and students in conservation via Satellite-Enabled Video Conferencing (SEVC) distance learning. Through the use of SEVC and Internet, IKONOS aims to promote international collaboration between experts from different institutions on the creation of a harmonised approach to documentation of cultural heritage. SEVC will also be used to transmit introductory courses in conservation and cultural heritage, thus generating greater awareness among the public and creating the foundations for the training of human resources in the field.
