“Cultural Heritage management in times of armed conflict” - the “Message from Amman” in the Lebanon-Israel crisis

In the year 2005 the Regional Management Support Unit of the Euromed Heritage programme organised an international Workshop in Amman on “Cultural Heritage management  in times of armed conflict”  to share experience and recommend further strategies /possible actions for the implementation of the Hague Convention. The Message from Amman, an appeal to governments and citizens, was issued from this workshop.

The destruction of Cultural Heritage is a loss of the collective memory and as such for the entire human society and civilization. In the Lebanon-Israel crisis the “Message from Amman”, signed by international cultural heritage experts from the North and South of the Mediterranean, should be taken into account  by the  Responsible Civil and Military Authorities in Israel and in Lebanon.

Killing of human beings and destruction of Cultural Heritage are both a  blunt violation of human rights and they are condemned by the UN charter of Human Rights, the Convention of Geneva and the UNESCO Convention of the Hague among others.

For detailed information, please refer to the Message from Amman 2005 and to the UNESCO information kit on the Hague Convention 1954 both available at the following internet addresses
